Lacey Morrell

Singer-songwriter from Canada's East Coast.

Lacey Morrell is a singer-songwriter from Canada’s East Coast.  Born in Stellarton, Nova Scotia, she grew up in a large, musical family singing Irish folk songs at family gatherings.  O Danny Boy, Belfast Mills and Wild Mountain Thyme would be performed in living rooms, with a circle of guitars and harmonies.  At the age of five, her parents enrolled her in piano lessons and she continued for 12 years, studying the Canadian Royal Conservatory curriculum. This classical training provided a backbone for her immense creativity.

Lacey began writing and composing songs at an early age, but her writing matured after the loss of her father to cancer in 2004. She began to use writing as an outlet for processing all that she experienced during her life. She performed on a public stage for the first time at her high-school talent show and quickly realized how rewarding it could be to share music with others. From there she performed at smaller venues around Nova Scotia. In 2008 she recorded a grassroots album, with vocals and piano, entitled Sing to the Heavens. An easy-listening collection of original work, this was her first taste of the recording process.

In 2005, upon graduating high school, Lacey attended St. Francis Xavier University and later Acadia University to become a teacher. Although the performing aspect of her music was put on hold, she never stopped writing. She shared her music with her students and, with the

support of her family, continued to pursue the possibilities of a career in music.

In 2010, following the devastating earthquake in Haiti, Lacey wrote a song in support of her husband Jocelyn Pierre who was born and raised there. She felt at a loss how to help and comfort him and his family in such an uncertain time. She wrote “You Are Not Alone” which featured a chorus written in Haitian Creole. The song was shared among family members and through contacts and connections it reached Jerry “Wonda” Duplessis. A Haitian native, infamous producer and owner of Platinum Sound recording studio in New York, Jerry noted potential in her work. Lacey was invited to the studio and has since returned several times, building a friendship and being mentored on the art of songwriting.

Finally, in the summer of 2015, to the relief of her family and friends, she decided that it was time to give her music a real chance. She contacted musician and producer J.P. Cormier, who was very impressed with her work, and they began recording an album together. Heartland is the result: a culmination of her classical piano training and the creative representation of her experiences and inspirations. It can be described as a blend of her roots in Folk and the modern sounds of the present. This album breathes new life into the traditional sounds of East Coast Music and the honest story telling will capture a deep and enduring place in your heart.
